Arya Vaidya Chikitsalayam: Ayurveda for a Global Future
Arya Vaidya Chikitsalayam & Research Institute (AVC&RI), a pioneering institution that is redefining Ayurveda on a global scale. Recognised by the Government of India as one of the top five Ayurvedic institutions in the country, AVC&RI is at the forefront of combining traditional Ayurvedic wisdom with modern scientific research. Padmashri Late Dr. P.R. Krishnakumar, a visionary leader and Chancellor of Avinashilingam University, was an iconic figure in the field of Ayurveda. Honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2009 for his unparalleled contributions to Ayurveda, Dr. Krishnakumar was instrumental in convincing the World Health Organization (WHO) to participate in the first-ever clinical research on Ayurveda treatment in 1977, paving the way for many more research collaborations. That same year, he also pioneered a unique 7½ year Ayurveda course based on the traditional Gurukula system, affiliated with Madras University and later Bharathiar University. Known as the “Coimbatore Experiment,” this curriculum produced exceptional Ayurveda scholars and remained free of cost, despite the immense financial strain on the institution. Dr. Krishnakumar continued his journey with remarkable resilience, unaffected by challenges, and is remembered fondly by his mentees as a leader who remains an inspiring presence even after his passing.
