Mahindra Launches New Electric SUVs, XEV 9e and BE 6e for the Indian Market
Mahindra & Mahindra, a renowned Indian automaker, has unveiled two new electric SUVs, the XEV 9e and BE 6e, as part of an ambitious drive to dominate the fast-increasing electric passenger car industry. These recent additions signal the introduction of Mahindra's two sub-brands, XEV and BE, adding to the company's existing EV lineup, which already comprises the XUV400. The XEV 9e costs ₹21.90 lakh (ex-showroom), while the BE 6e begins at ₹18.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Both models will be available for purchase beginning in January 2025, with deliveries scheduled between February and March.
The Indian electric car market has experienced extraordinary growth, with a spike in new models offered by various automakers. While Mahindra had a first-mover advantage in this category, growing competition caused the company to lose its advantages. The introduction of the XEV 9e and BE 6e signals Mahindra's renewed commitment to recovering a significant portion of the expanding market. These SUVs are a critical step in the company's ambition to restore its place as a major player in the electric car market.
Both SUVs are built on Mahindra's cutting-edge INGLO architecture, a contemporary flat-floor skateboard platform that blends lightweight construction with modular scalability. The platform uses high-density battery technology while emphasising safety, stability, and handling. Its ultra-high-strength boron steel frame and reinforced passenger compartment with a protective cage provide excellent occupant protection, demonstrating Mahindra's dedication to safety.
The XEV 9e's coupe SUV style is aggressive and stunning. The vehicle's exterior is marked by triangle LED headlamps and LED daytime running lights (DRLs) that span its width. The SUV's powerful and dynamic image is enhanced with sleek LED taillights, inverted L-shaped DRLs, a strong contour, and an illuminated Mahindra emblem. The BE 6e, on the other hand, features a modern and aggressive design language with sharp character lines, a pointed hood, C-shaped LED DRLs, and an aerodynamic hood scoop. The BE 6e is also outfitted with 20-inch alloy wheels and an illuminated BE symbol, emphasising its contemporary appeal.
The XEV 9e's cabin is dominated by a luxury triple-screen dashboard configuration. This setup has three 12.3-inch displays driven by Mahindra's Adrenox software, which combines infotainment, instrument cluster, and driver assistance capabilities. Wireless smartphone charging, a 16-speaker music system, a panoramic sunroof, and advanced driver assistance features (ADAS) are also featured in the cabin. The BE 6e's inside is as stunning, with two 12.3-inch displays and a floating wraparound design. Other highlights include a large sunroof, a 16-speaker audio system, automatic parking, ADAS, and a 360-degree camera for further convenience and safety.
Both models benefit from the INGLO platform's flexibility, which allows for two battery options: a 59 kWh pack and a bigger 79 kWh one. Initially, the 59 kWh type will be available, featuring lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for improved heat control and endurance. The SUVs also have rapid-charging capabilities, allowing for a 20-80% charge in 20 minutes with a 175 kW DC fast charger. Once deployed, the 79 kWh battery version is estimated to provide a range of around 500 kilometres on a single charge. With engine outputs ranging from 224 to 278 horsepower in rear-wheel drive variants, the SUVs guarantee a dynamic driving experience.
The launch of the XEV 9e and BE 6e demonstrates Mahindra's dedication to innovation and sustainability, and marks a new chapter in the company's efforts to lead the Indian electric vehicle market. Mahindra hopes to develop a significant presence in this competitive area by employing modern technology and focussing on consumer desires. With these cars set to join the road in early 2025, the automaker is well-positioned for a substantial return to the electrification race.
