Ola to Launch First Electric Car with Range of 500 Km in 2024
The step of producing electric cars is a part of company’s plan to make an electric vehicle ecosystem, with its own cars, two wheelers and batteries at a single plant in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Electric Vehicle making subsidiary of Olacabs, Ola electric, has announced to manufacture and launch an indigenously manufactured Electric Car in 2024. The company has organised a massive launch event, on Monday, where CEO of Ola Electric Bhavish Aggarwal announced the same.

The car will have a range of up to 500 km (310 miles), and an ability to go from 0 to 100 km per hour (62 miles per hour) in four seconds. The step of producing electric cars is a part of company’s plan to make an electric vehicle ecosystem, with its own cars, two wheelers and batteries at a single plant in the state of Tamil Nadu.

According to Aggarwal, while core focus of electric vehicle manufacturers like Tesla is cars that suit western markets, Indian companies may address the market for small cars, scooters and motorbikes for which there is a humongous demand.

Aggarwal has been seen creating suspense among his followers by sharing teasers and details of the car. He also made a tweet, previous month, saying, “We’re going to build the sportiest car ever built in India.” One thing is clear from his tweets and that is whatever Ola is planning will be focussed on youth.

Ola also re-launched base model of its S1 scooter during the event. Initially there were two models launched by the company named S1 and S1 pro. Former was a base model which latter was considered flagship. In January, this year, Bhavish Aggarwal tweeted about the suspension of its S1 model’s production. The re-launch will enable user to buy this model again. The 3 KWh battery installed in the S1 will give it an ARAI-certified range of 131 kilometres.

In July, Government announced a Production Linked Scheme (PLI) worth INR 18,100 Cr for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries. Ola was one of the three companies chosen under the scheme.

It recently launched the NMC 2170, its first indigenously developed battery cell. The company said that it has already roped in global suppliers to start mass production of the cell from its planned 50 GWh Gigafactory.

The company recently announced the NMC 2170 (where NMC stands for Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide), the first battery cell made in India. According to the business, it has already secured international suppliers to begin mass producing the cell at its envisioned 50 GWh Gigafactory.

According to Ola Electric, the battery is a high nickel cylindrical cell that uses NMC on the cathode side and silicon and graphite on the anode side. Bhavish Aggarwal, had said, "Ola is building the world's most advanced cell research centre that will enable us to scale and innovate faster, and build the most advanced and affordable EV products in the world with speed. Our first indigenously made Li-ion cell is also the first of many in our cell technology roadmap. Having a robust local EV ecosystem is important for India to become a global EV hub."
