GMR looks to expand Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad

GMR is planning to expand the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad. It is looking to expand passenger handling capacity of the airport to 50 million passengers per annum (MPPA) from the current capacity of 25 MPPA.

The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) had recommended allotting Terms of Reference for the expansion of the airport from 25 MPPA to 50 MPPA.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) also plans to construct a second terminal at the airport and add a third runway. The expansion plan further includes the expansion of cargo terminals, cargo satellite building and associate warehouse to cater up to 5.75 LTPA capacity of cargo.

GHIAL is targeting to expand the capacity to 40 MPPA by 2022 and to 50 MPPA by 2028. However, it has sought environmental clearance from the Centre to take forward these works.

The MoEF had last year granted environmental clearance to GHIAL for expanding passenger handling capacity of Hyderabad airport from 12 MPPA to 25 MPPA.
